March 14, 1924 - September 9, 2018
Sophie J. (Cwalina) Stevens, 94, of Haverhill, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Wingate Nursing Home in Haverhill. She was born on March 14, 1924 in Schenectady, NY, the daughter of the late Wladyslaw and Genevieve Cwalina. She graduated from Mont Pleasant High School, Schenectady, NY, class of 1942. Sophie married Raymond P. Stevens, on October 14, 1949. Together they enjoyed 49 years together built around a life of love and family. She enjoyed dancing the polka with her husband at the Polish Club for many years. They traveled to Florida, Vegas, Washington D.C. and Hawaii together. Sophie worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance and General Electric before moving to Massachusetts with her husband. There she worked as a tax examiner with the Internal Revenue Service in Andover, MA until her retirement. A deeply religious woman, Sophie was a devout Catholic and a former communicant of St. Theresa Parish in Billerica, MA. Through her parish Sophie volunteered weekly at Life Care Center praying the rosary with the patients. She served as a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound. She was an active leader and member of the weekly prayer group and also hosted weekly rosary nights at her home even into her later years. Nothing brought Sophie more joy than being with her family. She never missed spending family time on holidays, birthdays, and many other special occasions that her family now treasures. Sophie cherished and was so proud of her grandchildren, having them over for weekends to play cards and games and enjoyed being involved closely in their lives. She loved to keep busy with yardwork which resulted in a beautifully manicured yard around her home. Although she suffered with serious eye problems for many years, Sophie took it as her cross she needed to bear. Sophie was always ready to give hugs as she felt they always worked wonders to anyone in need. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Raymond P. Stevens, her sisters, Alfreda, Anne, Camile, and Irene and her niece, Diana. Sophie will be deeply missed by her two sons, Kenneth Stevens and his wife, Brenda of Methuen and Paul Stevens and his wife, Linda of New Ipswich, NH, her grandson, Eric Stevens and his wife, Katie of Norwood, MA, her granddaughter, Sherri Williams and her husband, Nathan of Berlin, Germany. Sophie also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and friends, all of whom she loved very much. A special thank you to the staffs at Brightview Concord River and Wingate Haverhill who lovingly cared for Sophie.
