    Ida May Messineo

    November 8, 1917 - February 26, 2022

On February 26, 2022 we lost our beloved mother Ida May (Barbagallo) Messineo. Born in Lawrence on November 8, 1917 to Grace Hall and James Barbagallo. She attended Lawrence schools and was a 1936 graduate of Lawrence High School and later furthered her education at McIntosh Business School. Shortly after graduation, she met and married her late husband, Augustine P. Messineo and shared 52 years of marriage and raised their four children. She was first and foremost a proud wife and mother and once her children were grown, Ida returned to Raytheon and the IRS until her retirement in 1981. She also spent several years as a volunteer at Holy Family Hospital. As the beloved matriarch of her family, she enjoyed many of life’s simple pleasures and was happiest when traveling and attending the many family events. She especially loved family and friends at their beach house. She had a remarkable memory and loved to reminisce about her younger years. What an amazing chunk of history, she witnessed, remembered and shared. Including, her mother’s stories of the Pandemic of 1918, when she was just a toddler and can’t believe she experienced a second pandemic all in one lifetime. Her passing sadly marks the end of her generation of a large extended family. Left to cherish her memory are her four children, daughter, and caretaker for many years Dr. Sylvia Hallsworth, Claire Robichaud and husband, William; sons, Randy Messineo and wife, Donna, Gus Messineo and wife, Joyce; and her loving grandchildren, William, Susan, Lisa, Randy, Nicole, David, Daniel, and Dale; and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; her niece, Dorothy Martin and family. She was predeceased by her sister, Elsie; brothers, Alfred, and Howard; son in-law, Jack Hallsworth; and her beloved, dog Toby. The family would like to express their extreme gratitude for the dedicated care she received at the Grace House in Windham, NH during her time there. Friends and guests are invited to call on Sunday, March 6, 2022 from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence St. Methuen. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, March 7, 2022. Interment to follow at the Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence. For directions and online guestbook, please visit the funeral home website, www.pollardfuneralhome.com. The Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home is honored to serve the Messineo Family.
