Dorothea Louise (Kaatz) Brox
July 2, 1932 - December 5, 2018
DRACUT, MA -- Dorothea Louise (Kaatz) Brox died peacefully on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at her home in Dracut, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 86. Born July 2, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY, the oldest of four children to the late Harry R. Kaatz and the late Evelyn S. (O’Brien) Kaatz. She was a graduate of Searles High School in Methuen, MA. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Raymond Brox, her children Eric Brox (Debra), Nancy Brox, William Brox (Julie), Peter Brox and grandchildren Georgia Brox and Sophia Brox. Dotty’s life was distinguished by her devotion to family life and her passion for the outdoors. She met her husband at a Lawrencian Ski Club meeting and they married in 1953. The first years of their marriage were spent on the slopes of the Kenwood Ski Tow in Dracut, MA and Snow’s Mountain in Waterville Valley, NH where Ray operated both ski areas. They raised their family in Dracut and founded the Hickory Hill Golf Course in Methuen in 1968. In the early days of the golf course, just as she did with the ski areas, Dotty worked behind the scenes in many aspects of the growing business. Fifty years later, Hickory Hill continues to be family-run. An avid skier and tennis player, weekends were spent with family and friends in Waterville Valley, NH where she was a member of the Black & Blue Trail Smashers. She played tennis competitively, loved the team camaraderie and made lifetime friends. In her later years, she moved to Sun Valley, Idaho to enjoy her outdoor pursuits. Whether she was hiking in the Alps, the Himalayas, or biking in Europe, Dotty brought her family along for the ride. Her zest for life was matched only by her broad smile and boundless energy. It was a badge of honor if one could keep pace with her on any given day. Dotty shared her love of theater, the cinema and photography with all her loved ones. She especially enjoyed working in the folk arts of reverse-glass painting and tole painting. Her home was adorned with many of her works, all of which are treasured by her family. She is survived by her sister Harriett Previte, brother William (Lucille) Kaatz, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, sister Evelyn L. Tomkiewicz, her grandchildren Raymond Richard Brox and Zoe Nancy Brox, brothers-in-law Dr. Zygmunt Tomkiewicz, Albert S. Previte, and 11 brothers- and sisters-in-law from the Brox family. Visitation for Dotty will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 from 4-8 PM at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence Street, Methuen. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 11 AM. Inurnment to follow at Richardson Cemetery in Dracut. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in Dotty’s memory to the Dracut High School Golf Team, c/o Care of the Superintendent’s Office, 2063 Lakeview Ave, Dracut, MA 01826.
